Power Foods

We all know the key to overall health and happiness is a balanced lifestyle with healthy eating and exercise. But there are certain foods that can help you stay on top of your nutritional goals while providing the most bang for their buck!

Here’s my list of the top power foods for optimal health and energy.

1. Quinoa

It makes an excellent side dish with dinner or can be a staple of your lunch routine! Because it’s a protein rich food, it’s highly recommended for both athletes and people wanting to lose weight! It keeps you feeling fuller longer due to having twice as much fiber as most other grains. It’s a great replacement for white rice!

2. Blueberries

The number one reason you should eat more berries of all kinds is because they are rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins! The other great thing about berries is they have a lower GI number, which means they won’t spike your blood sugar as much as other fruits after eating them.

3. Chia Seed

Chia seeds are a great addition to a healthy eating lifestyle because of their versatility. They have no taste, so they can be added to virtually anything you want! They aid in slowing digestion due to the¬†gelatinous coating that forms when they are exposed to moisture. They’re also high in fiber! Just 2 tablespoons has 7g of fiber, at only about 90 calories!

4. Spinach

In my opinion spinach is the King of the leafy green vegetables! Kale comes in a close second place, but I prefer spinach for it’s superior taste and texture when eaten raw. It’s high in protein, in fact it has the highest amount of all vegetables with 12% of your recommended daily value in one cup!

5. Hemp Hearts

Hemp hearts (shelled hemp seeds) are an overall super food because they are easily digested but provide a steady release of energy to your body. They are especially great for assisting in weight loss and lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.

So try to incorporate as many of these foods into your daily diet for optimal health. It can be as easy as adding chia or hemp hearts to yogurt, or making a spinach and blueberry smoothie!
